Abaza is a Northwest Caucasian language of the Caucasus region in Russia consisting of two dialects: the T'ap'anta dialect, which is the written standard, and the Ashkherewa dialect.
Abaza is spoken by approximately 48,000 people in both the Karachay-Cherkessia region of Russia (where it is written using a modified version of the Cyrillic alphabet) as well as in Turkey (where the Roman alphabet is used).
Like its relatives in the Northwest Caucasian family of languages, Abaza is highly agglutinative and has a large consonantal inventory of 63 phonemes, combined with a minimal inventory of only two vowels. It is very closely related to the Abkhaz language, but it preserves a few phonemes which Abkhaz lacks, such as a pharyngeal voiced fricative.
